Whale Shark Excursion

A full-day adventure south to the whale shark zone around Dhigurah — swim with the largest fish on Earth.

This is our most adventurous excursion — a full-day journey south from Bodufolhudhoo to the whale shark zone around Dhigurah in the South Ari Atoll, one of the most reliable places on Earth to swim with whale sharks.

The trip begins early morning. Our boat heads south through Ari Atoll, passing islands and channels along the way — the journey itself is part of the experience. We travel as far as the Dhigurah area, where the South Ari Atoll's resident population of whale sharks feeds year-round in the plankton-rich waters.

Whale sharks are the largest fish in the ocean, reaching up to 12 meters in length. Despite their size, they are docile filter feeders with no interest in humans beyond mild curiosity. Our experienced spotters scan the water from the boat, looking for the distinctive shadow just below the surface. When a whale shark is spotted, you'll enter the water calmly and swim alongside this magnificent creature.

The experience is humbling. Swimming beside a whale shark as it moves with slow, powerful strokes of its tail is one of the most extraordinary wildlife encounters on the planet. We often encounter multiple whale sharks during a single trip.

We follow the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme guidelines: maintaining distance, limiting group size in the water, and never touching or obstructing the animal's path. These rules protect both the whale sharks and the quality of your experience.

While whale sharks are occasionally spotted in our home waters around Bodufolhudhoo, the full-day trip south gives you the best possible chance of a guaranteed encounter. Lunch and refreshments are provided on the boat.
