Sunset Fishing

Traditional line fishing at dusk — catch your dinner as the sun sets over the Indian Ocean.

There's something deeply satisfying about catching your own dinner, and a Maldivian sunset makes the backdrop unforgettable.

We head out in the late afternoon aboard a traditional dhoni, anchoring over a reef edge where snapper, grouper, and other reef fish feed as the light fades. The method is beautifully simple — a hand line with a hook and bait, dropped over the side. No rods, no reels, no complicated gear. Just you, the line, and the patience to feel for a bite.

As the sun descends toward the horizon, the sky erupts in color — oranges, pinks, and purples reflected across the calm ocean surface. This is the golden hour in the Maldives, and experiencing it from a boat on the open water is something photographs can't fully capture.

The crew provides all equipment and bait, and they'll help beginners with technique. Children are welcome and often catch the most fish. Whatever you catch, our restaurant kitchen will prepare it for your dinner — grilled, curried, or however you prefer. There's no fresher seafood than fish you pulled from the ocean yourself an hour earlier.

Even if the fish aren't biting, the sunset alone makes this trip worthwhile.
