Manta Ray Snorkeling

Encounter majestic manta rays at one of the Maldives' best feeding stations.

← All Activities

Ari Atoll is one of the most reliable places in the world to encounter manta rays, and Bodufolhudhoo sits right in the heart of it. This is North Ari manta country — cleaning stations and plankton-rich feeding channels lie within a short boat ride of the island.

Our boat takes you to known manta cleaning stations and feeding sites — shallow reef areas where mantas return repeatedly to have parasites cleaned by small wrasse fish, or channels where they feed in graceful barrel rolls. Watching a manta with a wingspan of 3–4 meters glide silently beneath you is a moment you will never forget.

This is a snorkeling trip, not a dive — you don't need a certification or to be a strong swimmer. You float quietly at the surface in a mask and fins while the mantas move below; we provide the snorkeling equipment and your guide briefs you and positions the boat before you enter the water.

We follow strict codes of conduct: no touching, no chasing, no flash photography. You enter the water calmly and let the mantas go about their business. Often, curious mantas approach closely on their own — they seem as interested in us as we are in them.

During the southwest monsoon (roughly May–November), plankton blooms draw larger numbers of mantas to the atoll, and this is the peak season. But thanks to Ari Atoll's resident population, sightings happen year-round. Your guide tracks the current hotspots to give you the best possible chance. As with any wild-animal encounter nothing is guaranteed — but few places in the Maldives offer better odds.

A note on whale sharks: they congregate in South Ari Atoll, not in our North Ari waters, so they are not part of this trip. We can arrange a separate full-day whale-shark excursion to South Ari on request.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is the best time to see manta rays in the Maldives?
Manta rays are seen in Ari Atoll year-round thanks to a resident population. The peak is the southwest monsoon, roughly May to November, when plankton blooms draw larger numbers into the atoll's feeding channels.
Do I need to be a strong swimmer or a certified diver?
Neither. This is a surface snorkeling trip, not a dive — no certification is required. You float at the surface in a mask and fins while the mantas pass below, and a guide briefs you beforehand.
Are manta ray sightings guaranteed?
No wild-animal encounter can be guaranteed, but Ari Atoll is one of the most reliable manta destinations in the world, and your guide tracks the current cleaning-station and feeding hotspots to give you the best possible chance.
Where does the manta snorkeling trip go?
To manta cleaning stations and plankton-rich feeding channels in North Ari Atoll, a short boat ride from Bodufolhudhoo. The exact spot depends on where the mantas are gathering that day.
Can I see whale sharks on this trip?
Whale sharks gather in South Ari Atoll, not in our North Ari waters, so they aren't part of this manta snorkeling trip. We can arrange a separate full-day whale-shark excursion to South Ari on request.
